Epidemiology and psycho-social aspects of onchocercal skin diseases in northeastern Nigeria

Ikem Chris Okoye and colleagues found that the worst consequences of onchocercal skin diseases were social isolation, shame and low self esteem, and the high cost of medication. They call for onchocersiasis programmes to address the anxiety and depression associated with the disease.

An Autopsy Study of Maternal Mortality in Mozambique: The Contribution of Infectious Diseases

Working in Maputo Central Hospital, Mozambique Clara Menéndez and colleagues found that half of the deaths occurring in pregnancy and childbirth were caused by infectious diseases. By implementing measures to prevent and treat specific infectious diseases many maternal deaths could be prevented.

The Prevalence of Previously Undiagnosed Leprosy in the General Population of Northwest Bangladesh

Fake Moet and colleagues determined the prevalence of previously undiagnosed leprosy in the general population and compared this with the known number of leprosy patients. The PPUL figure was six times higher than number of known cases.
