Effect of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria on health and education in schoolchildren: a cluster-randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

IPT of malaria improves the health and cognitive ability of schoolchildren in an area of high perennial transmission. The reduction of the malaria burden requires not only effective treatment but development programmes for the poorest that include action on environmental sanitation, water supply and nutrition. Efforts intended to improve performance at school should not focus exclusively on health factors. Poverty itself is strongly associated with poor levels of attention in schoolchildren.
