Defining Childhood Severe Falciparum Malaria for Intervention Studies

The accepted definition of severe malaria is appropriate for clinical purposes, but Philip Bejon and colleagues show its specificity in clinical trials may be improved by a parasite density threshold and by excluding children with certain conditions.

Preventing Childhood Malaria in Africa by Protecting Adults from Mosquitoes with Insecticide-Treated Nets

Based on malaria transmission models, Gerry Killeen and colleagues suggest that, while coverage of pregnant women and children should still be prioritized, wide-scale communal use of insecticide-treated bed nets would provide considerable benefit to vulnerable groups and should be promoted and evaluated in the field.

Commercial Serological Antibody Detection Tests for the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Systematic Review

Based on a systematic review, Madhukar Pai and colleagues conclude that none of the commercial immune-based tests for pulmonary tuberculosis so far evaluated perform well enough to replace sputum smear microscopy.

Serial Testing for Tuberculosis: Can We Make Sense of T Cell Assay Conversions and Reversions?

The authors discuss a new study, which they say is a valuable addition to the existing literature on the performance of interferon gamma release assays in serial testing for TB infection.

HIV Impairs Opsonic Phagocytic Clearance of Pregnancy-Associated Malaria Parasites

Based on a comparison of HIV-negative or HIV-infected primigravid and multigravid women, Kevin Kain and colleagues suggest that opsonic phagocytosis might protect against pregnancy-associated malaria, and that HIV infection might impair this parasite clearance mechanism.

Malnutrition and Infection: Complex Mechanisms and Global Impacts

The authors discuss current concepts and controversies surrounding the complex influences of malnutrition on infection and immunity, and point to practical consequences of countermeasures in acute malnutrition.
